Northwest’s Master of Science in Applied Computer Science is a 16-month program that offers hands-on, professional education in today's high-demand areas, including big data, web and cross-platform mobile development, security and user experience design. Computer Science is projected to grow by 15% by 2029, a growth rate larger than any other program.

Northwest is an electronic campus that gives students access to the internet and the Missouri Research and Education Network. Computer languages and tools supported on the network include Java, C#, Swift, Hadoop, and Tableau. Databases include SQL, SQL Server, MongoDB and Oracle 12c.

All students have access to specialized computer laboratories housed in the Colden Hall Computing Complex.

Admissions requirements

Candidates for the M.S. in Applied Computer Science should meet the following requirements:

  • Completion of a four-year undergraduate degree from an accredited college or university with:
    • 2.75 overall undergraduate GPA
    • A major or minor in a technical computing discipline, including coursework in data structures, 数据库系统, discrete mathematics, 和统计数据. With the exception of data structures, applicants who do not satisfy these requirements may take undergraduate-level courses to remove any deficiencies. (A student who has not completed a course in data structures cannot be admitted to the program.)

Applicants who do not meet these requirements may be admitted by considering the full academic profile and/or professional experience. The GRE is optional but could be used to improve standing for admission to the program. A Master’s degree from an accredited institution with at least a 3.0 GPA could also be used to meet entrance requirements. The Computer Science and Information Systems area reserves the right of final decision in accepting students to graduate degree candidacy in the department.  Criteria for admittance to the program and acceptance to degree candidacy may include academic qualifications and performance, number of applicants, and available resources.

In countries that utilize the backlog system in higher education, students with excessive backlogs may be considered with a GRE score to improve standing for admission. Current information on backlog limits can be found on the department web page.

International admissions requirements

Before the program director is allowed to review your application, the 研究生院 must verify your TOEFL score. The University sets the acceptable TOEFL score as:

  • 213 for computer-based TOEFL
  • 71 for the Internet-Based TOEFL
  • 550 for pencil-and-paper-based TOEFL
  • 6.0 overall for IELTS
